Where to print

Getting the book onto paper

The PDF is yours to keep and print as often as you like. This is where Australian parents can have it printed and bound properly, and which shops we checked and ruled out.

What to ask for

  • A5 portrait, 148 × 210 mm
  • 12 or 20 story pages, plus the cover and your dedication
  • Saddle stitched (folded and stapled through the spine)
  • Printed to the edge, so the bleed in the file is used

160 to 200gsm matte inner pages feel most like a real picture book. A heavier gloss cover is worth it if they offer one.

Checked, and not suitable

These come up often enough to be worth saying out loud.

  • Kmart Photos and Big W Photos

Photo-book builders, not print shops. You upload individual photos and arrange them in their own online editor — neither takes a finished PDF, so the book would have to be rebuilt page by page as flat images, losing the bleed and the trim.

  • Target

No in-store print or photo service in Australia.

  • Australia Post

Some outlets photocopy, but it varies by post office and none of them bind a booklet.

Or print it at home

A5 is half an A4 sheet. Print two pages to a sheet on A4, double sided, fold and staple through the middle — the page order takes a moment to work out, and most PDF readers have a booklet setting that does it for you.
